The hemp and cannabis plants contains more than 100 different chemical compounds known as cannabinoids, which interact with our horse’s endocannabinoid system (ours too) in many positive ways! The endocannabinoid system regulates things like pain, anxiety, inflammation, appetite and so much more…
One of those cannabinoids found in hemp is CBD, or cannabidiol (pronounced cann-a-bid-EYE-ol). CBD is non-psychoactive, which means it won't get you high — but there's a growing body of evidence that it has numerous health benefits, as CBD binds to these receptors in our endocannabinoid system, resulting in an overall improvement and consistent wellness in the areas this system regulates.
At LIX we use the highest quality Hemp CBD and combine it will other natural ingredients to create the highest quality human grade wellness products for our horses (safe for you too!)
Yes, here is why: Farm Bill passed – it removed hemp derived CBD from the federally controlled substance list (why it was on there we will never understand).

Yes, it sure is. Mostly anecdotal evidence exists in support of use of CBD oil in horses; even so, it’s good to have information. It’s being used to combat obsessive compulsive disorder in horses and a study at Texas A&M are currently conducting studies (as of March 17, 2020) to further research the efficacy in our equine friends.
The study is being led by Dr. Guay and is measuring the effect of CBD on inflammation, stress and stereotypical negative behaviors in horses, as well as pain and lameness scores.
For the trial, Dr. Guay and student researchers are administering different forms of CBD (i.e. oil or pellets) to the study horses, and measuring and evaluating the physiologic effects on the horses’ heart rate and cortisol level. They are also observing horses after dosing to see whether CBD had a measurable impact on obsessive-compulsive behaviors (like cribbing). Additionally, they’re tracking how long CBD stays in the horse’s system and, of course, how long it lasts once administered in varying doses. *We will keep you all updated on this study as it progresses. They’ll likely have results to report by EOY 2021.
“[By] the end of this study, we hope to have the data that will define and document what exactly is going on with the horses. Is it actually helping to minimize stress and stereotypical behavior? … Once we have this for horses then we’d like to … see if we can increase wellbeing within our food production animals,” says Dr. Guay.
Hemp is used a couple different ways in horses – as bedding and as an ingestible/consumable. Most are concerned with the consumable part of the conversation, I’d guess, so let’s start there. This hemp derived CBD oil is the perfect balance of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids making it a perfect oil when combined with the organic coconut oil also super safe and often used in the equestrian world. Additionally, the combo oil contains vitamins A, C, D, E, and K. CBD has shown to help with soothing the nervous system of horses without affecting balance or cognition. Additionally, it’s been used for chronic pain, and pain associated with falls or aging and arthritis. Please check our blog posts, too.
Horses metabolize differently than our canine, equine, or human friends, so the dosing is comparatively smaller for such a larger animal.
Yes. Our products are safe and should be a complement to you horse's already healthy diet and promoting their overall wellness.
We suggest starting with a daily dose of our product. Your horse will generally experience benefits of the CBD within 15-20 min, depending on their metabolism. Oils have a faster activation time, then other products containing CBD. Each serving will last anywhere from 4-8 hours in their system. If you are looking to improve things like mobility or mood, we suggest picking a time of day and being consistent, like a dose every morning. You can certainly provide a dose to a horse, that needs it for a particular situation that you know may effect their mood dramatically, just make sure you allow for activation time.
We have many people who give a dose morning and night. A nightly dose can also help your horse to settle in for the evening. Try and be consistent with your dosing schedule. Sometimes in can take several days to see the overall benefits from use of the product. Consistency will aid in promoting this wellness for your horses.
You should generally see an improvement from use of our product right away. Our dosing guide is a baseline, so if you do not see an improvement within an hour, try increasing with half of another dose. (If your horse is overly anxious or active, try giving a bit more)
It may also take a few days of a daily dose to see the overall benefits for your horses, so as we mentioned stay as consistent as you can on when you serve it to your horses.
We are always happy to help and answer questions, so feel free to reach out to us when needing assistance with dosing too!
The same reasons we take it! It’s great for a general wellness program! It’s also wonderful as anti-aging support and for reducing general anxiety, reducing pain, relaxation of a highly stressed animal, wound application. It has wonderful anti-inflammatory properties making it a great all around support.
No. Not in the traditional sense. If you give too much, there can be more sleepiness or less energy than you may have wanted when treating. Please use the dosing guide, your veterinarian for suggestions if they’re CBD savvy, and our dosing guide.
There aren’t really any side effects known or that we have seen. If you’re administering according to your vets (if so inclined to suggest use) or our dosing guide or other dosing guides, you’re in territory. We suggest ‘light side’ use and provide a dosing guide to use if you’re looking for different or more pronounced relief from pain or anxiety.
We know there is a lot of information (and a lot of misinformation) out there. The LIX crew is dedicated to providing the BEST organically grown, human grade, sustainably farmed and harvested hemp derived CBD, fruits and vegetable ingredients. Our horses, dogs, cats (and other family members) eat and/or drink these products every day.
*Note for all the horse people stopping here, CBD can change color in light or heat and that’s OK! Many people think their oil is mysteriously changing color from clear to pink. We want to clear any confusion or concern up now.
A pink hue shows the high quality of the coconut oil (Organic MCT) we use. When your coconut water (and in our case oil) turns pink, it means the coconut itself contained high levels of an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase. Polyphenols are a type of naturally occurring antioxidant and responsible for making coconut water and coconut oil so nutritious and delicious. While all coconut water begins its life as a clear liquid, those with higher concentrations of polyphenols will turn pinkish the longer they’re exposed to oxygen and sunlight or heat, and, if you’re still hanging in there reading, if they remain clear, they have lower levels of polyphenols. We want high levels of polyphenols!
CBD has virtually no side effects and carries no risk associated with over dosing. Over dosing is possible if ingestion of very large amounts occurred. It would hard to approach that amount in a household.
Administering big doses of CBD oil could, and likely will, relax and eventually cause sleep.
*IF YOUR HORSE IS ON MEDICATION, SEE BELOW ON “MY HORSE IS ON MEDICATION”.
When you have a horse (or a human) on medication and under the care of the vet (or dr.), run the use of CBD by them before using it. Occasionally, they’ll want you to adjust the dosage so we’d like you to have their blessing. We’re available for a chat if they’re interested in talking with us about our methods, etc. (see our contact page)
Broad-spectrum CBD oil differs from full-spectrum CBD oil mainly because it contains no THC but does contain all the other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoid elements. When all these elements are taken together, they work in sync with each other to produce a greater therapeutic effect.
We can offer broad spectrum CBD oils in various combinations of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. A broad-spectrum CBD offers a variety of cannabinoids working alongside CBD (minus the THC).
Our Pure-spectrum product is a Broad-spectrum that has been specially formulated to be flavorless & odorless, making it a pure product your animals will love!

Here are our thoughts on this (in conjunction with vets and peers):
If you are working on reducing anxiety, you may start to see the effects of cbd within 30-60 minutes. If you’re faced with chronic physical issues like joint pain and/or mobility issues, you may see it take 2 – 4 weeks for optimal results. Please see our dosing guide for low/medium/high dosage so you can quickly reach the dose your horse needs in order to find relief.
Yes! We all use these every day in our smoothies or as drops or as coffee adds – whatever you want to add it to is great!
*As with any additive, if you’re on prescription medication or pregnant or nursing, go ahead and run it by the doctor.
Yes. Consult with your vet if you have any of your crew on other medication. Let your vet know of our site or show the ingredients and if they have a need for additional information, please let us know and we will get you the info needed. We have senior dogs (and the occasional puppy) and everyone gets our products. I start low and get more strength as the crew needs it.
As you read above (hopefully, bc it’s interesting), all animals (yes us too) have an endocannabinoid system. With dogs though, one striking difference is that it appears there is a greater concentration of cannabinoid receptors in the dog’s brain than there are in most other animals.
Here is our opinion at LIX -
There is not enough evidence to make a total call so we will ask you to consult with your veterinarian. We don’t have enough research or case study results to come to a definite conclusion. There is some risk involved in the choice to use CBD oil during pregnancy because we simply do not know enough yet to declare one way or another the right thing to do.
Our hemp derived CBD will likely will offer therapeutic benefits as long because it does not contain THC, but if we do not fully know that it poses NO risk to developing pups, is it really worth the chance something could go wrong? Not for us.
Make a mindful decision when you decide to administer CBD to your mama dog.
Until we all have more scientific evidence or anecdotal proof for pregnancy, we will not be offering medical advice or recommending one path over the other. Our advice is that when it comes to producing life and raising the next generation of your puppies, you and your vet (and staff) have to be confident that you have the best available. LIX provides the best available.

Our dosing guides are considered a starting dosage point. This dropper guide and our chart below shows how many drops are needed to give this starting dosage based on LIX’s ELIXIR bottles which come in 30ml bottles. A full dropper is 1ml and contains about 20 drops. Increase by 5mg a day to find an effective dose for your animal. For pain relief, administer twice daily. Continue to increase dose, until you receive desired effects.
Droppers will contain 20 drops when filled to max 1.0 mL line on dropper. If you notice the dropper on the left, 1ml is only about 60% of the way up the dropper. If you prefer not to count out drops, please use guideline shown here with dropper or reference dropper dosing guideline on your purchased product packaging.
